Oppositional Defiance Disorder is a disorder that causes your child to lose their temper quickly and often. They’re pushy and bossy with other kids, they don’t like adults (because they tell them what to do), and easily become frustrated and angry. They’re very hard to be around, which makes parents feel guilty because while they love their child, a lot of the time they don’t like him. ODD kiddos grow up to be sulking, angry teenagers because they gravitate to other kids like themselves and feed off of each other. They tend to blame everyone else for their problems, nothing is ever their fault. Plus, their logic is very flawed – it’s extremely hard to reason with them.
So what do you do about this problem? James Lehman, creator of The Total Transformation program, says that this is not a self-esteem issue – this is a problem solving issue. When a child doesn’t know how to solve problems, they try to gain control of the situation in various ways – bullying, negotiation, bargaining, screaming, or hitting are a few. There are many others. Mr. Lehman says that there is no evidence that self-esteem leads to compliance, and emotions are no way for kids to cope with or deal with their problems.
One thing that oppositional defiance disorder kids need is structure. They need aggressive training that is build around how to solve the problems that trigger the defiant behavior. Read a Total Transformation Review to get more information on how you can help your child with this problem.
