When you go to create yearbooks, whether they be Home school Yearbooks or community yearbooks, your choice of Yearbook Publishers is of great importance. The first thing you need to consider to ensure you get a yearbook that is treasured for years to come is the theme of the book. Your publisher should allow you to choose this so the theme reflects what is important to those who will be making a purchase. If they will not, you need to keep looking. The right theme can make the book a hit while the wrong one can leave everyone disappointed. How do you go about choosing a theme for the book you are creating? Here are some steps to make this easier.
Start by reviewing other yearbooks. Look at yearbooks that your group has created in the past along with other books created by Yearbook Publishers you are considering. By doing so, you can determine what it is that you think has worked in the past and what didn’t. This will help you to narrow down your theme. Be sure to look at your mascot and colors also, if you have them, to see if they work with these items. You do not have to use these items, but may wish to if at all possible.
Look back over the past year and see if anything really stands out as a memorable event. If one thing sticks in your mind, you may wish to build your theme around this event. This may be a local event or one that affected the entire world. See if you can find a theme in these occurrences. Culture should also be looked at as things change quickly in a year’s time. You need to ensure that your book fits everyone who may consider buying it. You don’t want one that only speaks to a select group.
Once you have narrowed down your choices, you need to take a vote within the yearbook staff to determine which one to use. You may have to run it by administrators or a board before you can ultimately select a theme, but you should have backups if your first choice is rejected for any reason. Yearbook Publishers won’t have much say at this stage, but you may also need to run your theme by them. This is something that will need to be spelled out in the contract. By taking time to find a theme that really speaks to your group, you will have a book that will be remember for years to come.
