A Home Office For The Family

May 2nd, 2010 by admin

More and More homes are adding home offices for family members. There is work brought home from the office and home work from school to be considered. some families make home offices for the whole family. There can be desk space for Mom and dad and work space for the kids doing home work for school. Sometimes kids are more likely to do their homework if they see mom and dad are also doing “home work”. It is nice to be able to monitor the kids home work at the same time as you are getting your own work done.

A family home office needs adequate space for everyone who will be using it. Home office furniture needs to be coordinated looking rather than a mish mash of pieces left over from here and there. All the desks and work tables need to have computer and Internet hook ups and places to set phones, computers and printers. Chairs need to fit each person using them. Desk chairs need to be adjustable and wheeled to move easily. There needs to be adequate space and privacy for each person using the room. No one wants to be crowded when they are working.

Home furniture used in the office can include bedroom furniture if guests will be sleeping in that room. It would be better if the family office was only used for that purpose and guests could be located in another part of the home. Having several people using a space for working or hobbies, means it needs to be accessible to someone most o the time. There needs to be lots of storage for reference books as well as books for enjoyment in a home office. Comfortable seating for breaks in work are important.

A family home office needs to have wall colors and flooring that all the family will enjoy working around. It can be a pleasant family project to choose all the home office furniture, wall colors and flooring together. The desks, work tables and storage pieces can be attractive and coordinated, so everyone feels important to the room. Each person’s space should be pleasant to them, yet part of the whole room design. There should be a space for the messier art projects and science experiments some teachers send home with students. Children can benefit from being with Mom and Dad in a working atmosphere if the room is designed well.
